Often those are created in response to a near miss or incident that happened only days earlier. Common mistakes new White Card holders make with signs Across hundreds of site inductions, a few patterns repeat, particularly among those new to construction or people whose usual work is offsite but who occasionally visit projects, such as real estate agents, corporate staff or consultants. First, they treat the site induction as a tick box and assume their White Card replaces the need to keep reading. There is a persistent myth about “white card vs site induction”, as if one outranks the other. Your construction induction card gives you the base knowledge to understand hazards. The site induction and site signage tell you how those hazards look on this particular job at this particular time. Ignore one and the other loses much of its value. Second, they assume that PPE signs are generic. For example, they are wearing a high vis vest, steel caps and a helmet, so they walk straight into a “Respiratory protection required” area where respirators are mandatory. Or they enter a “Hearing protection required” plant room with only basic earmuffs that are not rated for the noise level. The sign speaks to a specific control, not just “some PPE”. Third, they stop reading after the first few words. Fifth, they rely on someone else. “The leading hand knows where everything is.” On a quiet day with plenty of time, maybe that works. A simple checklist for responding to site signs Use this short mental checklist whenever you encounter a construction site sign, particularly at a boundary, doorway or change of level. Read the whole sign, not just the colour and first word. Ask: does this require me to stop, to put something on, or to avoid doing something. Check your current PPE and equipment against the specific requirement. If it does not match, do not proceed. Look around for related controls, such as barriers, spotters, or additional signage, to confirm your understanding of the area. If something does not make sense, or the sign conflicts with what your supervisor told you, stop and clarify before entering. Build this habit and many of the “human error” incidents that fill investigation reports simply do not happen.
